Two pages from a Moleskine journal, letter is black pen. Doodles include a latte, a few random flowers, falling leaves, a graduate’s cap, an open book with a bookmark, and a light bulb. The letter reads:

Dear Shaz,

I (we, your followers) haven’t heard from you in a couple of weeks… I hope you’re alright and just focusing on grad school. Do you have midterms in grad school? It’s about that time. If you have exams or papers, I hope they go well. (I’m sure you’ll smash them! You’re smart.) Remember to take a latte break now and then.

Personally, I kind of hated college. I loved my friends and the city of New Orleans. But I can count the number of classes I loved on one hand; I cannot count the number of times the university administration screwed me. I took a semester off to work full time, to pay for the previous semester, and then ended up graduating a year late. With a super shitty GPA. But I did it! In my own time. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, and I now compare things to then.

“You graduated from college, you can go into Target… alone… for one thing!”

“You pulled all-nighters 3 days in a row, you can get up early this one time.”

Graduating college is one of my greatest accomplishments because it was made of so many smaller successes. I sometimes joke about having a mild case of PTSD from college, but I’m kind of serious. I still panic about what’s “due” the next day before I fall asleep, still wake up in a panic that I’ve forgotten something.

I graduated two years ago.

People always talk about how great college was — they talk about going back. And I’m like, NOOOO, THANK YOU.

… All of this to say you’re doing it! You’re in graduate school! You’re amazing and smart and already successful because you’re doing it. I don’t know if you need motivation, but have it anyway. KEEP GOING. I (we, your followers) believe in you.

(And come update us soon!)

All my best,

Kaiya xxxx

    1. Oh my god, hahaha! To be totally honest, I am AWFUL about sending cards/postcards. (I literally have a birthday card with me for someone whose birthday is today, so… Case in point.) Maybe doing these letters will help me be better. 😂

  2. This is a sweet, motivating letter! Also, I have these SAME exact fears about college; what’s due? what did I miss? how many classes can I miss before it’s a problem? when’s that final paper due? what’s a midterm? Oh, I need to see my advisor! …that whole PTSD thing from college makes sense, though! 😅

    1. I’m sure there must be a study somewhere about the effects of college/university on a person’s mental health. There are probably many studies, really. If/when I find them, I’ll link them. Thanks for reading! 🙂 ❤ x
