Two pages from a Moleskine journal, letter is black pen. Doodles include a top banner that reads “#1 GRANNY <3”, random flowers, clouds with rain and a sun, a giraffe peeking into the page, a purple butterfly, and a bottom banner that reads “I’M YOUR #1 FAN <3”. The letter reads:

Dear Granny,

Thank you so much for following my blog and always reading. Your support has always meant the world to me. I hope you know how grateful I am for all you’ve done for me. In a life where everything was constantly changing and overturning, you were stable, sturdy, secure. I could (and can) always count on you. For laughs, for understanding, for insight.

This love and support goes both ways. You need something, I’m there. Need hoses emptied, taps turned, chairs moved, basement cleaned, a frosty from Wendy’s, company on a Saturday afternoon — I’m there.

I don’t want to get too into this lest I cry and ruin this letter, but I admire you. You’re a strong, smart, independent, compassionate, one-of-a-kind woman. I look up to you not only because of all that you’ve been through, but because of who you are and how you don’t lose sight of yourself. You are sharp and funny and open-minded and friendly. Your laugh and openness with strangers remind me of grumpa. (Shit, there go my eyes.) You’re inclusive and magnetic and memorably vibrant. (It’s not just your hair!) I hope to be as involved and kind and witty and responsible as you…whenever I grow up. You’re my role model. Always have been.

I’m glad we do regular dinners and can’t wait to see you in a few weeks! Call/text/email me — I’m there.

You’re amazing. Take care of yourself. Pray for autumn weather.

I love you.

    1. I don’t think it’s too late. Why not write her a nice letter? You could put it at her grave if she has one, or burn it so that it goes ~into the universe~, or post it on your blog, or share it with others who loved her. 🙂 Thank you for your kind words. x
