Two pages from a Moleskine journal, letter is black pen. Doodles include heart garland, yellow flowers, and a mountain range behind some trees, a road, and a lake. The letter reads:

Dear AfroIrish,

You asked me for wisdom, and I’m humbled. Your writing regularly moves and inspires me, and I can’t imagine what words of wisdom I could possibly have for someone so naturally wise. But I will try!

To start: Live life to its fullest. Carpe diem. #YOLO

The same idea gets reworded and repeated endlessly. Like most clichés, these expressions are based in truth because the advice is sound: You have one life. Whatever circumstances led to your existence… they had to happen just so. Your presence is the amalgamation of infinite possibilities — the intersection where all details met and flourished into a new person. It’s a lot of pressure to live up to the universe’s arrangement of your being — but I think the meaning of life is to try. Live your life. Be your best self. Don’t fall to fear or comparisons.

I think you know all of that already, but sometimes reminders come when they’re needed. You strike me as someone who understands and appreciates differences — I hope you know that yours are appreciated, too. You offer an unpopular perspective (one not often seen, I mean) and that is valuable. Your voice (even digitally) is strong, and that is powerful. People want to hear your stories, thoughts, and creations.

I guess my words of wisdom are: Keep going. Because you seem like you’re doing it. Whatever “it” is. It is a pleasure to follow you and read your beautiful, thoughtful words. Thank you for letting me write to you.

Best wishes,
Kaiya xx

P.S. Please excuse the messy bridge [in the drawing]…

  3. Hey Kaiya! I actually forgot about your Tuesday schedule and decided to pop on in for a little bit of Kaiya and was surprised LOL 🙂 I love the mountain sketch, and your advice to AfroIrish/the rest of us seems very deep yet light to read…if that makes any sense. As always, all the best to everyone!
